The Minister of Agriculture, Water Resources, and Fisheries, Ezzeddine Ben Cheikh, confirmed that work is currently underway to draft a water code to address the water shortage and adapt legal frameworks to the evolving water demand in light of climate change. He emphasized that the Sousse seawater desalination plant will be operational before the middle of this year.

The minister added during a general session at the Council of Regions and Districts that, according to the 2023-2025 ministry plan, the construction of dams and reservoirs will continue, and the storage capacity of the Bouhertma dam will be increased. The plan also includes continuing to secure potable water supply and increasing the use of wastewater treatment for irrigation to reach 17% by the end of 2025.
