The United States Marine Corps forces in Europe and Africa hosted senior Tunisian military officials at the 2025 African Maritime Forces Summit to strengthen a lasting partnership and focus on shared priorities related to Mediterranean security and regional stability.

Tunisia’s participation in the AMFS underscores its strategic role as a gateway between Europe, Africa, and the Middle East. Leaders discussed collaborative training efforts, including recent amphibious integration and urban warfare exercises, and highlighted Tunisia’s value as a reliable partner in counterterrorism, maritime defense, and peacekeeping initiatives, according to the U.S. Army press service.

“Tunisia remains one of our most consistent and capable partners in North Africa,” said Major General Robert B. Sofge Jr., commander of MARFOREUR/AF. “Their commitment to professional development, democratic resilience, and regional cooperation makes our joint work meaningful and effective.”

The summit provided an opportunity to review past military engagements, including bilateral exchanges and security cooperation conducted by the U.S. Marines with Tunisian forces. Participants also explored ways to improve command and control systems as well as expeditionary support.

Representatives from the U.S. Marines and Tunisian Armed Forces discussed evolving security environments in the Maghreb and Western Mediterranean, with an emphasis on combating violent extremism and strengthening maritime defense.

“We are proud to stand alongside Tunisia and to strengthen this partnership that has lasted for decades,” Sofge stated. “Together, we are building a capable force network that enhances deterrence and improves the security of millions of people on both sides of the Mediterranean.”
