For nearly ten days, the Tunisian maritime administration and port authority underwent a thorough examination, known as a “mandatory audit,” conducted by a mission from the International Maritime Organization (IMO).

The audit resulted in Tunisia being ranked among the countries most compliant with IMO international instruments concerning maritime safety, marine environmental protection, and seafarer certification, it was announced in Tunisia at the conclusion of this mission. This will be followed by the development of a strategy aimed at strengthening the national maritime governance system, emphasized Khawla Belkhodher, CEO of the Merchant Marine and Ports.

She also highlighted that the mission provided an opportunity to enhance inter-institutional coordination in the maritime transport sector, improve working methods, and ensure follow-up on recommendations issued during the audit.

It should be recalled that the IMO’s mandatory audit program covers 176 member states, and Tunisia has been a member of the organization since 1963, actively participating in 31 international maritime conventions.
