Mehdi Aïssa, director of the World Wildlife Fund’s marine program in North Africa, told this Monday’s Midi Show that Tunisia’s marine ecosystems are among the best in the world, in terms of biological diversity.

“Several species of fish and aquatic animals such as sea turtles populate our coasts, whereas they are threatened with extinction in other countries,” he said.

On the other hand, he pointed out that certain human activities, such as trawling and pollution, are a threat to this diversity.

Mehdi Aïssa added that some Tunisian coasts are experiencing a real ecological catastrophe. “These beaches need urgent solutions, including the reduction of polluting industrial activities in their vicinity”, he added.
