[VIDEO] The Arctic Is No Longer the Same
The transformation of the Arctic into a warmer, less frozen, and biologically different region is now undeniably underway. Due to climate change, temperatures are rising, melting the ice and greening the tundra, triggering massive wildfires in the region and profoundly altering the environment of the animal populations that live there. The consequences are now expected to affect the entire planet. © NOAA.

The Arctic is the fastest-warming region in the world: three times faster than the global average. In 1967, the Norwegian Polar Institute captured images of two glaciers in Svalbard side by side, Kongsbreen and Kronebreen. Nearly 60 years later, in 2024, photographer Christian Aslund visited the area to photograph it from the same angle. The photo shows the same landscape, except the two glaciers seem to have disappeared!

Svalbard, a Major Witness to Climate Change

These glaciers still exist, but they are significantly retreating, as seen in the most recent photo. Svalbard is one of the most studied areas in the Arctic due to the very visible effects of climate change. Last August was, in fact, the hottest recorded since the beginning of measurements in Svalbard.
