An American travel influencer shared jaw-dropping footage from her cruise between Antarctica and South America in late March. While crossing the infamous and stormy Drake Passage, the ship encountered waves up to 12 meters high, creating an unforgettable experience for everyone on board.
A Cruise to Remember
On March 26, Lesley Anne Murphy, an American travel influencer, posted dramatic footage of the rough seas endured while crossing the Drake Passage. According to USA Today, wave troughs reached up to 12 meters (nearly 40 feet).
Thrown in Every Direction
The footage is striking. The ship’s bow smashes into towering walls of water, rising above the waves before crashing back down. Inside, passengers are tossed around, slipping, falling, and desperately holding on as the ship battles the elements.
“I love thrills, so I actually enjoyed it,” said Murphy. “I sat there for a long time, phone in hand, filming what was unfolding right in front of us.”
A Notoriously Rough Passage
The Drake Passage is one of the most turbulent stretches of ocean in the world, known for its unpredictable and violent seas.
The ship, named Ocean Explorer, is operated by Quark Expeditions. “Quark Expeditions has over 30 years of experience navigating polar waters with a fleet specially designed for ice navigation and an expert crew,” said a company spokesperson. “The ship, crew, and passengers completed their polar journey safely and without incident.
