The Italian press agency “Nova” launched, in April 2024, a survey based on 3,000 interviews carried out in six countries bordering the Mediterranean Sea – Italy, France, Greece, Algeria, Morocco and Tunisia – in order to better understand the centrality of Rome and Italy as well as their strategic importance at sea.
In particular, according to the survey results, around 87% of Italians believe that Rome and Italy benefit from a strategic geographical location. Generally speaking, among the citizens of the six countries surveyed, 86.6% consider that the location of Italy and its capital in the Mediterranean Sea is strategic.
Tunisia takes first place, with 91% of participants considering it to have a strategic location. Then, Algeria occupies second place with 89%, followed by Morocco with 85%, Greece with 83% and France with 79%, according to those surveyed.
Also in this case the percentages were higher in the countries of the southern Mediterranean Sea and in Greece, compared to Italy with 72% and France with 74%, although these figures remain high.
Respondents, especially those from countries south of the Mediterranean Sea, believe that relations between Italy and their countries are not sufficient: 70% for Tunisia, 63% for Morocco and 55% for Algeria . In the case of France and Greece, this percentage rises to 47%.
