Like every year, World Oceans Day is celebrated on June 8. The initiative was launched on the occasion of the Earth Summit, held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in 1992. The aim of this day is to celebrate the oceans, and to raise awareness among the general public of the crucial role they play. play in our livelihood, as well as the different means that exist to protect them.

For 2024 the theme is “Awakening new depths”

While the official UN date for World Oceans Day is still June 8, the 2024 event will be celebrated on Friday June 7.

The ocean supports humanity and all life on earth. However, despite our complete dependence on it, we have only explored about 10% of it. Although we know little about the ocean compared to its immense immensity, what we do know is that the consequences of our actions are evident throughout its waters. Knowledge about the dire state of the ocean is clear. Yet every year, humanity continues to make superficial and short-sighted decisions that increase the likelihood of the ocean’s disappearance, as well as our own.

Our relationship with the ocean urgently needs to change, and our efforts have so far only scratched the surface. To generate widespread momentum for the ocean, we must awaken new depths.
