Environmental Justice Department of FTDES Calls on ANPE to Act Urgently Against Chemical Pollution of Koutine River by Coca-Cola
The Environmental Justice Department of the Tunisian Forum for Economic and Social Rights (FTDES) has called on the Tunisian Beverage Company (STBG), producer and distributor of the Coca-Cola product range, to immediately stop discharging polluted wastewater into the Koutine River and to pump out and properly treat all stagnant water.
In a statement, FTDES highlighted that this river, located in the Sidi Makhlouf delegation in the Médenine governorate, which passes through three regions inhabited by approximately 10,000 residents, has become a source of pollution causing various illnesses in both livestock and local populations, including allergies, throat and nasal diseases, cancer, and hepatitis A.
According to the Forum, the pollution results from chemical contaminants and untreated wastewater (approximately 700,000 liters per day) discharged by STBG into the Koutine River for over four decades.
FTDES also urged the National Agency for Environmental Protection (ANPE) and the concerned regional authorities to urgently intervene and resolve this issue.
