Abidjan, April 21, 2026 (AIP) – The 15th Geographical Days of Côte d’Ivoire (JGCI) were opened on Tuesday, April 21, 2026 in Abidjan, around the theme « Territorial issues of the blue economy in sub-Saharan Africa », in the presence of figures from the scientific and institutional world.

Placed under the patronage of the Minister of State, Special Advisor to the Presidency of the Republic, Kobenan Kouassi Adjoumani , this scientific meeting aims to strengthen reflection on territorial dynamics and prospects for sustainable development linked to marine, lagoon and river areas.

In his opening address, Mr. Adjoumani welcomed this important forum for reflection on territorial issues in Côte d’Ivoire and Africa. He noted the relevance of the theme, believing that it reflects both the current challenges and the need to provide scientific, concerted, and sustainable solutions to questions related to the blue economy.

According to him, « the blue economy is no longer an option », but now constitutes a strategic lever for development, offering prospects in terms of economic growth, job creation, food security and the development of natural resources.

The Minister of State nevertheless highlighted several major challenges, including the sustainable management of fisheries resources, the preservation of marine and coastal ecosystems, the fight against the effects of climate change, and the balanced development of coastal and river areas.

To that end, he stressed the essential role of the geographer in the analysis of territories and the guidance of public policies, believing that research work must contribute to informing public decision-making.

Mr. Adjoumani encouraged participants to go beyond observations to formulate concrete recommendations adapted to African realities, while calling for the strengthening of synergies between disciplines, institutions and countries in the face of cross-border challenges.

He finally reaffirmed the commitment of the Ivorian authorities to support scientific research and initiatives in favor of sustainable territorial development, before declaring open the 15th Geographical Days of Côte d’Ivoire.
