TUNISIA–FRANCE: VIATUNISIA SUBMARINE CABLE COMES INTO SERVICE BETWEEN BIZERTE AND MARSEILLE

The operator Orange has announced the entry into the operational phase of the « ViaTunisia » submarine cable, a strategic project directly connecting Marseille to Bizerte for broadband data transport. After successfully completing all technical steps, including maritime studies, performance tests and installation and connection operations, this infrastructure is now ready to route traffic in real time.

Designed for a period of operation of 25 years, the cable received financial support from the European Union through the « Connecting Europe Facility » (CEF) program, which covered 30% of the project costs. Connected to the global network from Orange to Marseille via a fiber optic loop, « ViaTunisia » aims to strengthen Tunisia’s international connectivity, to support the growth of needs related to artificial intelligence and digital services, while improving the resilience of networks through alternative routes that limit the risk of disruption in the event of an incident on other submarine cables. This project is thus a major step forward for the digital integration of Tunisia and North Africa into the global digital economy.
