GABÈS: THE STOP POLLUTION COLLECTIVE CALLS FOR DEMONSTRATION FOR THE DISMANTLING OF THE GCT POLLUTING UNITS

The collective « Stop Pollution » working for a better quality of life in Gabès, reiterates its call for a massive citizen mobilization to denounce the ecological crisis affecting the region, on the occasion of World Environment Day, celebrated on June 5 of each year.

Under the slogan « The people demand the dismantling of the units », the collective intends to continue its fight against the industrial pollution generated by the polluting units of the Tunisian Chemical Group (GCT) and its commitment to the defense of fundamental rights to health, the environment and fair development.

The announced action program includes a protest rally on Friday, June 5, 2026, in Chott Sidi Abdel Salam in Gabès from 5:00 p.m., as well as a demonstration in Tunis, on the same day at 6:00 p.m., in front of the GCT headquarters.

On Saturday, June 6, 2026, a « protest march » will begin at 5:00 p.m. before the Court of First Instance of Gabès, in the direction of the governorate’s headquarters, in order to denounce the judgment handed down last February, rejecting the request for arrest of the polluting units of the GCT for lack of evidence of the damage, and to reaffirm the right to a dignified life.

The collective thus launches its urgent appeal to citizens, as well as to all the civil and lively forces of the country for massive participation in these movements.

The Court of First Instance of Gabès had, in February 2026, rendered its judgment in the interim case aimed at obtaining the immediate cessation of the activity of the polluting units of the GCT, rejecting the request for judgment for lack of evidence of the damage.

This case, whose judgment has been postponed several times, has been brought to justice by the regional order of lawyers, with the aim of putting an end to the activity of the polluting units of the GCT, in parallel with popular movements demanding their dismantling and affirming the opposition of the inhabitants of Gabès to all kinds of cohabitation with pollution.

According to the collective, « the environmental crisis has been going on for more than 53 years in Gabès, hindering development and destroying the foundations of decent living in a region with unique characteristics. Industrial chemical activity has destroyed the Gulf of Gabès by destroying 93% of marine biodiversity and negatively impacted the only maritime oasis of the Mediterranean, in addition to the depletion of water resources, the deterioration of the public health of the population and the spread of dangerous diseases ».

Active since 2012, the collective « Stop pollution » defends the right of the Gabès region to a healthy environment and advocates the eradication of all forms of pollution and the change in the regional development model.
