Togo is receiving new security support from the European Union (EU). The EU Council recently approved a new assistance measure of €5 million, or about 3.3 billion CFA francs, under the European Peace Facility (EFP) for the Togolese armed forces.

The new envelope is intended for the Togolese navy. It will finance monitoring and communication equipment, maintenance equipment, logistical support and intervention capabilities. The EU specifies that the equipment provided is not intended for lethal use.

Targeted support for maritime safety

This decision brings the total amount of support granted to Togo under this European mechanism to €15 million, or nearly 9.8 billion FCFA.

This new assistance, which aims to strengthen maritime safety in the Gulf of Guinea as part of the Architecture of Yaoundé, the regional cooperation scheme against piracy and illicit trafficking, complements a first envelope of 10 million euros approved in July 2025. This was intended to strengthen the capacities of the Togolese armed forces in the face of the threat of violent extremism in the Savannah region.

According to the EU Council, these two measures are aimed at strengthening cooperation between Brussels and Lomé on security and defence, while contributing to the stability of the Gulf of Guinea.

This assistance is part of a broader system that combines development support, prevention of violent extremism and support for African maritime security and anti-piracy operations. It also complements the EU Security and Defense Initiative for the Gulf of Guinea, launched in December 2023.

It should be recalled that the EU remains one of Togo’s main partners. In early June, at the fourth political dialogue between the two sides, Brussels and Lomé reaffirmed their cooperation on peace, governance and economic development, with a particular focus on regional security and resilience in the face of cross-border threats.
