The Danish shipping group Maersk announced on Monday the resumption of Red Sea transit for one of its additional lines, as part of a gradual return to the use of the Suez Canal, a strategic shortcut between Asia and Europe.
The company said in a statement that it would restore crossings for its WAF6 service. This line, operated exclusively by Maersk, connects the Middle East, the Mediterranean and West Africa.
« This change marks a new step towards a gradual return to the trans-Suez corridor, » Maersk said.
Most maritime carriers had abandoned the Asia-Europe trade corridor via the Suez Canal following the attacks in the Red Sea by the Yemeni Houthis, forcing ships to take the much longer route bypassing Africa via the Cape of Good Hope.
Some shipowners have recently begun a gradual return to the area, such as Maersk, which announced on Thursday the resumption of its service connecting the Middle East to the east coast of the United States via the Suez Canal;
