Tunisian lawyer and academic Slim Laghmani has officially taken office as a judge at the International Court of law of the sea (TIDM), during a solemn public session of oath.

Elected at the 36th States meeting at the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, Slim Laghmani begins a nine-year term, which took effect on October 1, 2026.

Alongside four other new judges from Ghana, Brazil, Vietnam and India, he made a solemn commitment to exercise his powers in full impartiality and conscience.

Professor Emeritus of Public Law and Political Science at the Faculty of Legal, Political and Social Sciences in Tunis, Slim Laghmani has a leading academic and institutional background. Holder of a State doctorate and aggregate in public law, he headed the Tunis Department of Public Law and worked as a State legal expert.

A key player in the democratic transition in 2011 at the head of the subcommittee on civil liberties, he also represented Tunisia as a councilor before the International Court of Justice (ICJ in 2024. Associate member of the Institute of International Law and figure of the Beit El Hikma Academy, this appointment to the TIDM crowns a career devoted to international law and the law of the sea.
