The Taiwanese government has approved a plan for the development of maritime technologies and industries for 2027-2030 to make the maritime economy a growth engine and a national security issue. The sector already represents about EUR 40.68 billion (1.500 billion TWD), or nearly 5.9% of GDP, confirming the growing importance of the blue economy in Taiwan.
The program is structured around three priorities:
- strengthen the monitoring and knowledge of maritime spaces through new technologies,
- develop innovative maritime industries
- And promote a maritime culture more rooted in society.
By relying on Taiwan’s industrial assets, the authorities want to increase the competitiveness of national maritime technologies. Through interdepartmental collaborations and demonstration platforms, the government intends to foster the development of sectors such as smart ships, autonomous vehicles, smart ports, precision aquaculture and state-of-the-art maritime equipment.
This strategy also aims to strengthen the safety of territorial waters and oceanographic research capabilities in the Pacific West. It supports the transformation of an already dynamic sector, driven by maritime transport, fishing and water recreation, while marine energy and offshore engineering are among the most dynamic activities.
