The International Center for Environmental Technologies in Tunis (CITET) has been tasked with providing technical assistance to polluting industrial companies in the Nabeul region in order to support them in reducing their discharges and improving the environmental situation of Oued Hadjar, the Ministry of the Environment announced on Friday.
The decision was taken during a working session chaired in Nabeul by the Minister of the Environment, Habib Abid, devoted to the monitoring of the pollution of the wadi, affected by the discharge of industrial and urban wastewater as well as by solid waste.
The ministry called on the companies concerned to assume their responsibilities in the protection of the coastline by adopting efficient wastewater treatment processes before it is discharged into the wadi, which flows into the sea. They were also invited to develop innovative solutions that reconcile economic activity and the preservation of natural resources.
The meeting also focused on measures likely to improve the environmental situation in the long term, in particular through the strengthening of periodic inspections carried out by the National Agency for Environmental Protection (ANPE) and the various administrations concerned.
This meeting was part of a visit by the minister to Nabeul to assess the state of the environment in the governorate during the summer season, in particular the issues of cleanliness, waste management and protection of the natural environment.
At the end of this visit, Habib Abid, accompanied by the governor of Nabeul and local officials, went to the beach in front of the « La Cyrène » café, in Hammamet North, damaged by the recent floods.
He asked the Agency for the Protection and Development of the Coastline (APAL) and the municipality to undertake the clean-up operations and the necessary work to rehabilitate the site.
