Appointed by presidential decree at the head of the Ministry of Fisheries and the Maritime Economy, Fatima Camara officially took office on Wednesday, July 29, 2026, during a service award ceremony with her predecessor, Fassou Théa. Back at the head of a department she knows well, the new minister took advantage of this assumption of office to draw the main lines of her action.
After heading this department before successively occupying the Ministries of Trade and then Industry and Trade, she says she returns with a strengthened experience, which she intends to put at the service of the development of fisheries and the maritime economy.
The Minister set a clear course: sustainably preserving fisheries resources, while making fishing an engine of economic growth. To achieve this, it intends to intensify the fight against illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing, considered one of the main challenges of the sector.
Other priority projects include the modernization of artisanal fishing, the development of aquaculture and the improvement of the infrastructure for landing, conservation and marketing of fishery products. According to her, these reforms should increase the added value of the sector, create more jobs and strengthen food security in Guinea.
Addressing fishermen and mareyeuses directly, Fatima Camara assured that she wanted to place their concerns at the heart of her action. It promised to work to improve their working conditions, including through better access to equipment, increased safety at sea and better organization of the fish storage and transport chain.
The new minister also insisted on the need to bring the administration closer to the realities of the field. She called on the executives of her department to show rigor, professionalism and commitment, in order to effectively meet the expectations of the populations.
Finally, Fatima Camara reached out to technical and financial partners as well as to the private sector, believing that the modernization of fisheries and the development of the maritime economy require strong investment, innovation and partnerships.
By taking the reins of the department, the minister thus displays the ambition to make fishing, a more competitive, better structured and more wealth-creating sector, in line with the vision of economic transformation carried by the Guinean authorities.
