« The Sea is Round » is a new maritime and environmental program to be aired starting April 20 on France 3 Bretagne and France.tv. We spoke with Adélaïde Castier, editorial coordinator of the magazine, who described the genesis of this new project.

France 3 Bretagne and France 3 Corse have collaborated to create « The Sea is Round, » a series of 3 episodes to discuss the sea, drawing on the experience and expertise of each region. In these coastal regions with extensive shorelines, researchers, biologists, sea professionals, and other enthusiasts are mobilizing to find concrete solutions for the protection of marine environments.

Adélaïde Castier, who manages the show « Littoral » in Brittany, is the coordinator of this new program. She answered our questions.

How did the idea for this new concept come about?

« Studies show that the environment is a major concern for young people. » Adelaide became aware of this over the past few years while leading the show « Littoral. » It naturally emerged to dedicate a program to these environmental issues with the aim of focusing on these questions while highlighting numerous and concrete solutions to address them.

How is the magazine structured?

Each episode covers two topics—one from the Mediterranean perspective and one from Brittany’s perspective. « For the first episode, we focus on marine invasions. Sometimes, new populations suddenly proliferate in a territory. Should we be afraid? In the Mediterranean, the blue crab, nicknamed the ‘Daesh crab,’ is attacking numerous species and has become the bane of fishermen. In Brittany, after disappearing for several decades, the octopus has resurfaced massively and is generating a new economy, » explains Adélaïde Castier.

To conclude the show, with his segment « Dans l’œil de Bilou, » navigator and co-founder of the Explore Endowment Fund, Bilou (Roland Jourdain), takes us even further, meeting a new generation of committed explorers.

Who is the target audience for this program?

« This series is aimed at the widest possible audience. It’s an exercise in scientific popularization that appeals to people already sensitized to the maritime world, sea professionals, as well as younger and novice audiences. Whether living near the coast, in a city, or in the countryside, the maritime world fascinates and intrigues everyone, » specifies Adélaïde.

Why this title?

« Beyond the pun, this title is highly evocative. It draws the connection that can exist between the sea and the land—a poetic, imaginative aspect surrounding the sea and the importance of linking it with the current challenges faced on land. It’s an apt expression with a positive and rounded message! It also pays homage to Jean-François Deniau, an emblematic figure in the maritime world and an important influence for the ‘Littoral’ team.

« The Sea is Round » is a show to be watched on Saturdays, April 20, 27, and May 4 at 12:55 PM on France 3 Bretagne and available now on France.tv for the first episode.
