This event takes place in the blue zone — accreditation of the blue zone is required to attend.
The ocean currently absorbs nearly 30% of man-made CO2 emissions, making it one of the Earth’s leading climate regulators. From polar waters to ocean depths, microscopic plankton and diatomeas to viruses and microbial communities, physical and biological processes determine how carbon is absorbed, transported and stored.
However, the future of this natural carbon sink remains uncertain.
Convened by Mission Neptune, this session will explore a fundamental question: do we have the scientific knowledge, technologies and sustained observation systems necessary to understand and anticipate the future of the oceanic carbon sink?
Bringing together leading ocean scientists and a new generation of researchers, the discussion will examine the frontiers of oceanic carbon science, existing knowledge gaps, and opportunities offered by exploration, emerging technologies, sustained observations, data and artificial intelligence.
