After the observation by fishermen of a peregrine shark off Port-la-Nouvelle, another specimen was seen near Collioure and Argelès-sur-Mer. Last Sunday, it was the Catalans who were able to see a new one in the Olympic port of Barcelona.
While the Aubois fishermen of Port-la-Nouvelle are barely recovering from their encounter with an imposing 10-meter-long peregrine shark, new appearances have made ink flow in regional newspapers.
The inhabitants of Argelès-sur-Mer and Collioure (Pyrénées-Orientales) were able to admire the movement of a perperine shark at a distance of just 500 meters from the Vermeille coast, in a spot popular with divers. The observation was reported on Sunday, April 19.
A perigous shark, a whale and dolphins spotted in Barcelona
On the same day, the Catalans saw a juvenile pergergine shark sailing in the heart of the Olympic port of Barcelona. A very rare visit that aroused a lot of emotions. The local shark specialist, Juan Carlos Garcia, explained on his Instagram page: « We associate Barcelona with waste and pollution, of course, but we also have a lot of life to know and protect (…) This is a very good sign, because it indicates that sharks grow and feed in our waters. »
The people of Barcelona have been very lucky lately, since they have been able to see dolphins and even a whale, all this marine fauna having passed along the coast in the space of two weeks.
These testimonies are multiplying. It seems that it is not the same shark, since the sizes mentioned do not match. This means that we would have several sharks. The « season » of peregrine sharks has indeed begun, there is no longer any doubt.
Observations continue
These follow currents with a high concentration of plankton. As a reminder, they are perfectly harmless to humans and only feed on plankton, which they recover by opening their mouths wide and filtering the water thanks to their gillspines. No worries so for too adventurous bathers.
The « Ailerons » association, domiciled in Montpellier, lists all pegrine sharks as part of the « PEL-MED » project. The objective is to obtain as much information as possible about the species, to multiply the observations and, why not, to place the first beacon on a pelgrine shark in the Mediterranean Sea. The second largest fish in the world has not finished making people talk about it.
