Four years after signing an initial memorandum of understanding dedicated to the reconstruction of the port of Beirut following the 2020 explosions, the ports of Marseille and Beirut, represented by the French and Lebanese Ministers of Transport, renewed their partnership and formalized a new phase of cooperation focused on commercial development.
The approach of August 4th was on everyone’s mind when, on June 21st, the Lebanese delegation, composed of Fayez Rasamny, Lebanon’s Minister of Transport, and Marwan Naffi, CEO of the Port of Beirut, arrived in Marseille. On August 4, 2020, explosions of hundreds of tons of ammonium nitrate stored at the Port of Beirut killed 235 people and injured more than 6,000. Since then, the Port of Beirut, the true » heart of the relationship between France and Lebanon , » in the words of Philippe Tabarot, Minister of Transport, has begun a phase of infrastructure reconstruction to which the Port of Marseille Fos (GPMM) has contributed, sharing its expertise in key areas such as terminals, port governance, logistics operations, and safety and security. In 2022, the two ports formalized their cooperation in a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).
