The artificialization of coastlines, often perceived as a simple destruction of habitats, has a much more insidious impact than it seems on marine biodiversity. A French team from the EPHE – PSL and the University of Montpellier, involving research laboratories under the supervision of the CNRS and the companies SPYGEN and Andromède Oceanology, reveals, thanks to environmental DNA, an ecological paradox: if the marinas along the French Mediterranean coast each harbor nearly twice as many fish species as adjacent natural sites, they reveal a standardization of fish communities on a regional scale. This work, illuminating the threat to the resilience of marine ecosystems, is published in Global Change Biology on June 24, 2026.
