Tunisia plans to take an important step in its environmental policy with the presentation of a bill to gradually ban single-use plastic bags. This initiative is part of an approach to combating plastic pollution and protecting the environment and public health.

The text provides, as soon as it comes into force, the prohibition of the free or paid distribution of these bags at points of sale, as well as their total abolition in terms of production, import and distribution within a maximum period of twelve months.

The project also introduces the principle of extended producer responsibility, requiring manufacturers to assume the environmental and financial impacts of their products throughout their life cycle.

All actors in the production and distribution chain are concerned, with financial penalties of up to 50,000 dinars and the seizure of non-compliant products. This reform aims to encourage a transition towards a more circular economy and sustainable consumption patterns in the service of future generations.
