A new cooperation has emerged for ocean preservation. On March 18, 2024, the Oceanographic Institute of Monaco, the Prince Albert II Foundation, and the French Committee for the Organization of the United Nations Ocean Conference (UNOC) 2025, formalized their collaboration for the organization of the upcoming « Blue Economy and Finance Forum » (BEFF) by signing a memorandum of understanding. This forum, endorsed as a « UN Ocean conference special event, » will take place on June 7 and 8, 2025, at the Grimaldi Forum in Monaco, preceding the UNOC, which will be held from June 9 to 13, 2025, in Nice. Co-organized by France and Costa Rica, this UNOC 2025 will support the implementation of Sustainable Development Goal 14 (SDG14), namely: « Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas, and marine resources for sustainable development. »

In this context, Monaco was entrusted by Olivier Poivre d’Arvor, the special envoy of French President Emmanuel Macron, with hosting and co-organizing with France the next Blue Economy and Finance Forum. The forum aims to identify and mobilize solutions to support blue economy initiatives and the preservation of marine ecosystems. Private sector actors, businesses, banks, insurers, philanthropies, as well as public sector actors, including environmental funds, agencies, and development banks, will have the opportunity to meet and jointly devise solutions. The forum will also focus on the most threatened countries and regions. Following the discussions, recommendations are expected to be conveyed to participants of the United Nations diplomatic conference, which will commence the following day in Nice, as part of UNOC 2025. All of this is aimed at supporting the financing of a sustainable economy.
