I consider myself a green dreamer and my role in the planet to shed light on sustainability from ideas to life through a cooperative and innovative approach to conservation and sustainable development.

I have more than 20 years’ experience in Climate Change and Sustainable Development policies and governance, with more than 15 years in International Development Assistance to the MED countries in the field of coastal and marine-resources conservation and management. 

I’m an Environmental Engineer specialised in groundwater management at the Imperial College of London and with a Post-Graduate Degree in Environmental Engineering Management at Ecole des Mines de Paris. Alessio holds a European Ph.D. on Climate Change Science and Management from the Ca’ Foscari University of Venice where he focused on climate change impacts on coastal zones. 

Currently I chair the Mediterranean Sea and Coast Foundation, a non-profit organization which aim is protecting marine and coastal ecosystems with direct conservation actions and through blue innovation.

Since February 2019, I coordinate MedWet, the Mediterranean Wetlands Initiative, bringing together 27 Mediterranean and peri-Mediterranean countries that are Parties to the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands. Palestine and a number of organizations and wetland centers are also part of the MedWet Initiative.

During the past ten years I worked with several UNEP organizations including UNEP-DTIE, PAP/RAC, SCP/RAC and Plan Bleu of the UNEP-MAP participating among others to the ICZM Protocol process and to the preparation of the SCP Road Map and Action Plan for the Mediterranean.
