Director of Science at the International Mediterranean Science Commission
(CIESM), with more than twenty years experience in research and policy.
Officially qualified full professor (Italian Ministry of Research, 2013), she
previously acted as director of IAMC, CNR-IT (2014-2016), and was member
of the Advisory Board of the Italian Ministry of Research, (Horizon 2020 SC2).
Member of national and international science evaluation committees (EU fp6,
fp7; INCO 2003, 2011; PNEC-Fr 2001-2004), Laura served as Italian
Ambassador for ISME (2001-2005), and was elected Member of the
JPIOceans Strategic Advisory Board (2012-2015), and the Experts Group of
the EFIB – Sect. Environmental Biotechnology (2013-2015).
Career experience
Laura Giuliano lead various international (mainly EU) scientific projects, and
contributed various scientific (GESAMP) and strategic panels (OCDE, IUCN)
and side-events (EU Parliament), especially targeting legal and socioeconomic
issues related to the use of marine research. She was invited
professor at the at OTGA/DOALOS Training Course: Conduct of Marine
Scientific Research (MSR) under the United Nations Convention on the Law of
the Sea (UNCLOS) (May 2019)
Expertise
Laura’s scientific experience targets marine microbial natural patterns in
natural marine systems, and their potential industrial applications. For this
aim, she developed new techniques based on the combination of cultivation
and molecular methodologies. She published more than 70 peer-reviewed
scientific articles (including on Science, Nature, PNAS) and has been Guest
Editor of various international peer-reviewed scientific journals (FEMS
Microbiology and Ecology, Deep-Sea Research Part I, Marine Biotechnology;
Marine Genomics).
