A true masterpiece of French naval engineering, the Tara Polar Station is a scientific laboratory destined to drift in the Arctic Ocean. It has just started a program of about ten scientific missions over two decades. What is the first expedition of this program?

The kick-off of twenty years of research

Created by naval architect Olivier Petit, the Tara Polar Station is managed by the Tara Ocean Foundation. It is actually a ship with a length of 26 m and a width of 16 m, for a mass of 250 tonnes empty. The concept was born in 2014 but its industrial design began in 2023, for an inauguration on April 24, 2025. Subsequently, several tests took place, including a first one-month drift in the Arctic to validate the systems, or a first wintering in real icy conditions in Finland.

On July 19, 2026, the Tara Polar Station departed from Lorient, as part of the Tara Polaris I expedition. As explained on the official project page, this mission marks the start of a two-decade observation program (until 2045) in the Central Arctic Ocean. Recall in passing that this region is almost inaccessible in winter but also invisible to most satellites.

Currently, the ship is heading to Norway for a transfer navigation of about a month, in order to ship the last heavy scientific equipment. Then, it will strategically position itself on the Russian coast to be voluntarily imprisoned by the sea ice in September. For a year, the station will be blocked 90% of the time and for the remaining 10%, it will drift according to the currents through the Central Arctic Ocean to the Fram Strait, between Svalbard and Greenland.

What is the purpose of this first expedition?

In fact, the Tara Polaris I expedition has four main objectives. The first will consist of exploring the polar unknown, that is, continuously studying marine life during the long polar night – about six months – in order to understand how life can survive in the cold and total darkness. The second objective will be to analyze the unique biological and genomic mechanisms that viruses, bacteria and the ice pack microbiome develop to tolerate these hostile conditions.

The purpose of the expedition will also be to assess the impact of pollution. Indeed, if it will be a question of measuring the impact of accelerated melting of ice, it will mainly be a question of quantifying the omnipresence of new chemical and plastic pollutants reaching the North Pole by the various sea currents. Researchers will also work on the identification of new molecules and/or new biological processes that can be used in the medical or biotechnological field – advanced bioprospecting.

What equipment does the station have?

The Tara Polar Station has a « central well » (Moon Pool), i.e. a vertical gut that crosses it up to three meters deep. This allows the immersion of sensors and divers safely against surface frost and the thickness of the ice. We also mention the central geode, an isolated structure integrating large glazing with high thermal resistance. Coating the ship, the latter offers a 360° view to monitor the movements of the ice. You should also know that the station benefits from hybrid propulsion, using a Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) biofuel, solar panels, a wind turbine and smart batteries.

With regard to the life range for the crew – 12 people in winter and 18 in summer – the station contains a desalinator capable of producing 300 liters of drinking water per hour. Finally, communications are provided by the European broadband satellite network OneWeb, whose coverage has become global in 2023.
