On Tuesday, June 2, Cambodia launched, with the support of the UN, a dispute settlement process with neighboring Thailand regarding their maritime territories in the Gulf of Thailand, where oil and natural gas reserves are estimated at 256 billion euros. The two countries of Southeast Asia have been opposing each other for decades on the demarcation of their 800-kilometer land border, a legacy of the French colonial era, but also of their maritime territories. Cambodia’s decision to initiate a mediation process, taken under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNC), follows Thailand’s cancellation last month of a memorandum of understanding signed in 2001 on their maritime claims and energy exploration, AFP recalls.
