How can we imagine the Mediterranean of tomorrow? What challenges will Mediterranean societies have to face in the face of climate change, geopolitical tensions, pressure on resources or economic and social issues?

To answer these questions and make the first results of the foresight exercise « MED 2050: The Mediterranean on the horizon 2050 » accessible to as many people as possible, the Blue Plan publishes a booklet of sketchnotes and illustrations devoted to the MED 2050 scenarios.

This booklet offers a visual, educational and synthetic reading of the six scenarios imagining possible futures of the Mediterranean region by 2050: inertia, marginalization of the Mediterranean and pragmatism; shocks of successive crises; growth at all costs; blue-green transition; new model of sustainable development specifically Mediterranean; or recognition of the Mediterranean Sea as a global common good. Each scenario explores a possible trajectory for the region and highlights certain collective choices that could shape its future.

Designed as a tool for awareness and popularization, this booklet translates complex reflections into sketchnotes and infographics accessible to all. Each illustration provides a better understanding of the interactions between the environment, economy, governance, societies, technologies or territorial dynamics, which determine the major Mediterranean issues.

Beyond the foresight exercise, this publication invites everyone, experts, decision-makers, teachers, students, young generations and citizens, to participate in a collective reflection on the desirable futures for the Mediterranean. As Khadidja AMINE, Prospective Manager at Plan Bleu, mentions in the editorial, the objective of the MED 2050 scenarios is not to « say with certainty what the situation of the Mediterranean will be in the next twenty-five years », but « to open the possibilities » in the face of the challenges that the region could be faced and to prepare for them.

This popularization work is part of the Plan Bleu approach to promote participatory foresight and to raise awareness of the major challenges facing the Mediterranean region. His message is a vibrant reminder that the Mediterranean is a common good and that its future depends on the collective choices made today, and this at all scales.
